Almost every home electrical device has to convert the AC to DC in order to operate and energy is wasted in this conversion, AND each device has to contain circuitry to convert the AC to DC in order to operate. This conversion wastes energy. If you were operating entirely off the grid - DC would make much more sense than AC because you wouldn't be running the electricity over long distances. The problem would be finding electrical devices that run on DC power (i.e. devices that don't contain the AC-DC conversion circuitry) for a reasonable price - because of the economy of scale. So for now you have to use a power inverter to convert your solar or wind power from DC to AC..... and then our devices convert it back to DC... Edison and Tesla fought over this. The bottom line is that AC is better for transmitting power distribution over long distances while DC is better for short distances. Might have been better to convert the AC to DC at the house meter and have the devices in the house all run off of DC. Then our green energy production usage would be much more efficient without losing energy converting it from DC to AC. Right now it goes DC (at the solar panel or wind turbine) through and inverter (DC to AC) then to the house meter then to each device in the house (which then converts it back AC to DC). NOTE: This is not currently true of most HVAC units which use AC motors and compressors - but the AC is converted to DC for the circuit boards that run these units and DC motors and compressors do exist that could be used).
