You must have seen that astronauts wear spacesuits when they land on moon.

Do you know the reason? The reason is that moon has no atmosphere. Exactly, I should say it has negligible atmosphere. Let us discuss. As the gravitational force of moon is 1/6th on the gravitational force on earth. The escape velocity of gases or air molecules on earth is greater than the moon.

As the moon is also near to the sun as earth and get same amount of heat as earth. Here in earth, density of air is more than moon. Thus there is more probability of collision at earth. But there is almost no collision of gas molecules on moon.

A large number of gas molecules on moon have speed more than the escape speed on moon. Therefore large molecules escape from moon. This is the reason that moon has negligible atmosphere and earth has atmosphere.

In my one of earlier articles on Newton’s law, I have discussed about the Newton’s second law. We all are also aware about the Newton’s first law which mainly states that if an object is at rest will remain at rest and if it is in uniform motion will remain in uniform motion until and unless some external force is applied on it.

But do you know that the Newton’s second law is known as the real law of the motion. Let us prove it by showing that the Newton’s first law is contained in the second law.

Proof: let us take an isolated system that is system isolated or free from external forces.

From this law F = ma, where F is force, m is mass of object and a = acceleration.

As the system is isolated, thus F =0, therefore above equation becomes:

ma = 0,

but m can not be zero, thus a= 0 that is acceleration is zero of the object.

It is only possible when the object is at rest or in uniform motion and this is nothing but Newton’s first law.

It proves that the Newton’s first law is contained in the second law and thus proves that the Newton’s second law is the real law of motion.

Do you want to be a scientist or an engineer? If you are opting for science stream and wondering what will you do after completing your plus two class. In India, most of the students of the non medical stream, after plus two pursue engineering because there is no shortage of engineering colleges in India or outside India. They may not get admission in the best or next best college but surely they will get admission in an engineering college. As we are discussing about science and engineering, let us first discuss the meaning of these two:

Scientists and science: Of course scientists deal with science and vice versa. They basically deal with the study of the laws of the nature, the physical laws and other.

Engineers and engineering: They deal with the design and construction of objects on the basis of certain laws. You can say that a mobile has been developed by a mobile engineer but by using basics laws.

It is also wrong that scientists do not develop the things. You must have heard the term patent. There are numerous examples where scientists have developed the things and applied for patents and got successfully them. Then they are contacted by different industries to let them use their work.

Here I want to share a small story, when I was doing my graduation, I came to know about one of my seniors. He has cleared the IIT exam but opted for BSc and he completed his MSc from one of the best IITs and then PhD and so on.

Thus it is your decision, what do you want to be? There are lots of scope as scientist and engineer. Please share about what do you want to be: scientist or engineer? Whatever may btethe answer do it with quality and our best wishes are with you?

For most of us, the assumption is that, the professional science degrees gain a lot of levee than pure science subjects. Pure streams are rarely a first choice. Students prefer engineering and medical than physics, chemistry, maths and biology. They assume that the pay and job security is much higher than studying a pure science course. But the truth is far from it. The fact that as a pure science student you get an opportunity to be a part of a bigger crowd – of educators, researchers, developers, innovators etc. These jobs is much more diverse, secure and rewarding than any other job. The best part is, that you can do all of this side by side, as professor you can be a researcher, a developer and many more. If you choose to be an educator, you get an opportunity to witness transition and evolution first hand. So if you are one of those who love the finer things of life, and would want a career as a future professor – Pure Sciences is definitely a way to go.

Here is why pure sciences is perfect for you.

In depth knowledge of the subject: The best of educators are those whose knowledge surpasses most. They are the ones who are a whole enchilada of knowledge. Any question you ask them, the answer would be spontaneous. This is one of the reasons why in pure streams make better teachers. They have more in depth knowledge about the subject, this proves to be beneficial to both students and teachers.

More Practical Experience: As an engineer or a doctor you are more toned down to a specific skill set. Though they are equally good and important – but as a pure science student and if you want to pursue a career in the education world – you tend have a wide knowledge base than them and also the freedom of more practical experience in any sub field or fields. You are not tied down to one part of the subject. For example if you have Physics as your core subject – the possibility to learn about all the sub fields of physics if desired by you is more like nuclear, aerodynamics, aeronautical etc. Plus as you grow – the practical knowledge never ceases. You would always be a part of new inventions and testing new technologies etc.

Research Opportunities: Most students who have done professional courses end up going into the corporate world. Very few opt for the vibrant line of research. To be the heart of everything new. As a pure science student you have the golden opportunity to be front and center of brand new possibilities.

Upto date with the current technologies: As a science student and someone who progress to become an extremely qualified professor – you are always up to date with current technologies. You would be a part of an elite group that is not only responsible for these new technologies but also you would be the sole proprietor of spreading these technologies to a larger audience. Your students would look upto you to impart them knowledge about these technologies.

Networking: As a pure science you get make a lot of connections through the people you meet, where you intern, you professors and peers etc. Your current network of people consists of future CEO’s, entrepreneurs, award winning professionals etc. They become your strong backbone in the long run.

As a pure science student, you have a whole wide world in front of you. Your possibilities are immense. You can get into research, development, education and many more. Your knowledge base in wider and the opportunity to become the next Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Hermann Muller, Werner Heisenberg and many more.

Author Bio:Trisha is a professional writer and has been writing on a variety of topics. Currently she is working with Shiksha.com. She is an ardent reader, a traveler and a passionate photographer. She wants to explore the world and write about whatever comes across her way.

We have already discussed the difference between distance and displacement. Let us today discuss the difference between displacement and angular displacement. We will also discuss the difference between velocity and angular velocity.

Definition of displacement: Displacement is the shortest path between the two points. It must be the straight line and straight line is always the shortest path. Velocity is related with displacement and it is defined as rate of change of displacement.

Definition of Angular displacement: As the name suggests, this type of displacement must be in rotation. It is normally represented by θ.

Angular velocity is related with angular displacement. It is represented by rate of change of angular displacement. It is normally represented by ω that is ω = dθ/dt.

These are the differences between displacement and angular displacement and their relations with velocity and angular velocity respectively.

Students often asked me what is the difference between force and torque? We might be aware about these terms that is force and torque. Let us understand the concept of force. Force according to a layman is an effort to change the state of a body from rest to motion or from motion to rest and it may also defined as an effort which tries to change the state but it may not change the state. For example, there may be heavy stone and we can try to change its state of rest but we may not be possible to do the same.

But we consider force in a straight line motion or in linear motion. If there is a rotational motion, even then we can apply a force. For example, when you rotate a handle of a door, then according to you it moves with the help of external force applied by you, but according to a physicist it moves according to the torque provided by you.

Thus in simple words torque is provided to move a body in rotation and force is provided to move a body in linear motion.

This is the major and simple difference between force and torque.

We all are aware about the concept of force, if not then force may be defined as any push or pull that can change the state of rest of an object or can change the velocity of the moving object or can change the direction of the object. Forces can be classified into two types: conservative and non conservative forces. To understand the concept of these two, we also must be aware about the concept of work. The work is said to be done when a body actually moves a distance along the direction of the force. Now let us discuss the difference between the conservative and non conservative force:

Conservative forces: A force is said to be conservative if work done by the force or against the force to move an object through a certain distance depends only upon the initial and final positions of the body not on path followed by the object between initial and final positions.

For example: gravitational force, magnetic force between two magnetic poles, electrostatic force between two electric charges are examples of conservative forces.

Work done in moving an object through round trip or closed path is always zero.

Non conservative forces: A force is said to be non conservative force if work done by the force or against the force to move an object through a certain distance depends on the nature of the path not on the initial and final positions.

For example: frictional forces, induction force in a cyclotron.

These are the differences between the conservative and non conservative forces. If you know more examples, then please share with our readers.

We all know that acceleration is rate of change of velocity. Thus according to this definition, if the velocity of the object is zero or constant, then its acceleration will be zero. But there are certain things in life where only definitions can not define another parameter but these parameters or things may be explained using certain logic.

The question here is can a object has acceleration when its velocity is zero. You will be surprised to know that there are certain cases where this can happen. Let us discuss 2 of the examples:

1. When you through a ball upside and when it reaches the top it pauses for a moment. At this moment, the velocity is zero but the ball still has acceleration and that acceleration is due to acceleration due to gravity. Thus at the peak, the velocity is zero but the object is still accelerating.

2. Second example can be discussed in the case of pendulum. When a pendulum moves, and when it reaches the extreme positions its velocity is zero but its still accelerating due to gravity.

It means there may be cases where acceleration may be there even if there is no velocity.

If you know more examples, you can share with us.
