Basic Science of Tsunami- let us pray for the people of Japan

Dear friends,

We all know that Japan has faced a natural disaster earthquake. Due to this, tsunami happened. There are instances when science can do nothing in front of nature. Today, we will discuss about the basics of tsunami:

Origin of the term tsunami: It is originated from Japanese words “tsu-meaning harbor” and “nami-meaning wave”.

Reason: The main reason of a tsunami is the displacement of a substantial volume of water or perturbation of the sea. This displacement of water is caused due to earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, or rarely by meteorites and nuclear tests. Therefore, most tsunamis happen at geologically active area where tectonic shifts make volcanoes and earthquakes common. Tsunamis can race across the sea at the rate of about 800 kilometers/hour. At that pace they can cross the entire expanse of the Pacific Ocean in less than a day.

Defense against tsunami: The best defense against any tsunami is early warning. 26 nations have prepared a Pacific Tsunami Warning System, in Hawaii, that maintains a web of seismic equipment. Similar systems are also proposed worldwide.

Let us pray to God for the people of Japan for their safety. At least, this we can do, if not more.

Thanks
