Difference between Soft X rays and Hard X rays

Dear friends, last time I have discussed about the origin of x rays.

Let us today discuss about the two types of x rays on the basis of their energy:

soft x rays and hard x rays.

  1. Soft x rays: As the name suggests, the x rays having lesser frequency, it means lesser energy (because energy is directly proportional to frequency) is known as soft x rays. As frequency is inversely proportional to wavelength, thus these soft x rays have more wavelength. These x rays have lesser penetrating power. The energy of soft x rays is lesser than 5 kilo electron volt.

2. Hard x rays: As the name suggests, the x rays having more frequency comparative to soft x rays, it means more energy (because energy is directly proportional to frequency) are known as hard x rays. As frequency is inversely proportional to wavelength, thus these hard x rays have lesser wavelength than soft x rays. These x rays have more penetrating power. The energy of hard x rays is may vary from 5 to 10 kilo electron volt.  These are the basic differences between soft and hard x rays. I hope you have understood the differences.
